Sunday's Obituary: John G. Gatlin

John J. Gatlin, a well-known brickmason, died last night at the residence of his sister, Mrs. N. L. Page, 95 Wharf avenue. He was 56 years old and had lived the greater part of his life in this city. He leaves a wife.

John G. Gatlin was born on 15 August 1841 in Tennessee. He was the son of my 4th-great-grandparents John McNairy Gatlin and Margaret "Peggy" Gower. He served in the Confedederate Army as a private in the 10th Regiment, Tennessee Cavalry, Company D, and was held at Rock Island Barracks as a prisoner of war. He married Martha Ann Gower on 20 December 1865 in Davidson County, Tennessee. In 1874, John and Martha adopted a two-year-old girl, Minnie (formerly Tennessee Reed). John died on 31 August 1897 in Nashville, Davidson County, Tennessee and was buried in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Nashville.

Alice P. Taylor was born on 29 July 1861 or 1862 in Tennessee. She was the daughter of William Taylor and Sarah J. Little. She married my second cousin four times removed John Harvey Sawyer on 6 March 1889. Their children were William Leslie Sawyer, John Allen Sawyer, Jane Sawyer, James Henry Sawyer, Etta Sawyer, and Alice Sawyer.

My first cousin 4 times removed William James Page was born about 1873 in Tennessee. He was the son of John Franklin Page and Nancy L. Gatlin. He worked as a pants cutter. He married Bernice about 1899. He died in Nashville, Davidson County, Tennessee on 4 March 1905. The cause of death was heart disease.

William Daniel Mayo was born on 22 February 1850 in Tennessee. He was the son of Samuel Lee Mayo (my 3rd-great-grandmother Angeline Mayo's brother) and Amanda Ezell. He married Elizabeth "Bettie" Eves on 8 November 1876 in Davidson County, Tennessee. Their daughter Jennie Mayo was born on 19 July 1878. Their son Robert Lee Mayo was born in 1880, but died on 15 May 1881. Their son William Daniel Mayo Jr. was born on 27 February 1882, and died on 29 January 1901.

William worked as a druggist, and in the insurance and real estate business. He was a director of the Commercial National Bank of Nashville.

He died in Nashville, Tennessee on 17 March 1919.

Nancy L. Gatlin was born on 8 July 1829 in Tennessee. She was the daughter of my 4th-great-grandparents John McNairy Gatlin and Margaret "Peggy" Gower. She married John F. Page on 24 February 1854 in Davidson County, Tennessee. They had seven children: Mark Albert Page (born 25 August 1856), Anna Lee Page (born 27 January 1858), John G. Page (born 16 August 1860), Robert E. Lee Page (born about 1864), Martha Adelia Page (born 19 March 1869), Mary Elizabeth Page (born 23 January 1871), and William James Page (born about 1873). Her husband John died on 6 May 1893. Nancy was predeceased by two of her children; her son Robert died on 11 November 1898 and her son William died on 4 March 1905. Nancy died on 2 January 1911.

Sarah California "Callie" Russell was born in Tennessee on 13 September 1844. She was the daughter of of my 4th-great-grandmother's brother James Russell and Miriam Hill. She married James F. Ivy on 27 January 1876 in Williamson County, Tennessee. Their daughter Miriam was born in May 1887. Her husband died on 19 July 1925. Callie died on 1 October 1928.

Mills Louis Russell was the son of my 4th-great-grandmother's brother James Russell and Miriam Hill. The obituary incorrectly states that his father's name was Andrew Jackson Russell. James Russell's father was Andrew Russell; perhaps his middle name was Jackson.

Mills married Ollie Elizabeth "Bettie" Butts on 31 December 1882 in Williamson County, Tennessee. Their daughter Medora "Dora" Russell was born on 3 October 1883. She married William Barnett "Barney" Beasley on 24 February 1909 in Williamson County, Tennessee.

FRANKLIN, Tenn., Jan. 31––(Special.)––Judge Frank C. Russell, a prominent figure in the politics of Williamson county for many years, died here tonight at 6:3- o'clock in the sixty-ninth year of his age. Funeral services will be held Friday morning from the residence, conducted by Rev. W. S. Taylor and Rev. W. A. Cleveland.
   For  six years Judge Russell served as sheriff of this county. He also served fourteen years as county judge and was a number of times a member of the county court. He was United States commissioner under President Cleveland and represented Williamson county in the fifty-eighth general assembly.

Francis C. "Frank" Russell was born on 15 February 1848 in Davidson County, Tennessee. He was the son of my 4th-great-grandmother's brother James Russell and Miriam Hill. He married Sarah Ann Givens on 8 January 1885 in Williamson County, Tennessee. Their son Skelton Givens Russell was born on 3 November 1885. Their second son, Frank Russell, was born about 1887, but died on 4 September 1899. Frank died on 31 January 1917 in Franklin, Williamson County, Tennessee.

    Robert Leland Taylor, aged one month, died Thursday at the residence of his parents, No. 1797 Eighth avenue, South. Funeral services will be from the residence at 8 o'clock this morning. Interment at Vaughn's Gap.

Robert Leland Taylor was born in Nashville, Tennessee on 12 June 1907. He was the son of my great-grandmother Anna Gertrude Tarkington. I do not know who his father was. The informant on his death certificate, Gertrude's sister Margaret "Maggie" Tarkington, said that the father was unknown. Gertrude must have known who her son's father was, since her son did not have her surname. I suspect that Margaret knew too, and just did not wish to say. Robert died on 4 July 1907 in Nashville. The cause of death was congenital debility and marasmus.

Marshall J. Gatlin was born on 24 June 1903 in Nashville, Tennessee. He was the youngest child of my 2nd-great-grandparents John William Morton Gatlin and Sarah Claire Dyer. By 1911, he was living in Chicago, Illinois. He married Julia Ancis on 16 August 1922. He worked as a printer. Marshall died of tuberculous peritonitis at his residence in Chicago on 13 September 1923.

Jewel Gatlin, Beloved Cat

Jewel Gatlin passed peacefully at her home in Lincoln Park, New Jersey on the morning of Sunday, May 15, 2016. Her precise age is unknown, but she was elderly. In her earlier years, she experienced difficult times. She was found abandoned in an empty apartment in 2010. Thankfully, she was found and brought to the animal rescue group START II. After almost 6 months, she was adopted, and was given a loving home. She was an only cat at first, but was later joined by her adoptive siblings. Shortly before her death, she was diagnosed with intestinal cancer.

Jewel was extremely gentle, sweet, and well-behaved. She purred readily upon being petted. She will be greatly missed.

Jewel is survived by her adoptive mother, Beth Gatlin; her adoptive sisters, Harmony, Melody, and Luna; and her adoptive brothers, Kit and Flash.

    Funeral services for Sandy G. Tarkington, 81, father of County Investigator R. L. (Bob) Tarkington, who died at his son's home early Sunday morning, will be conducted at 3 o'clock this afternoon at the Charlotte Avenue Church of Christ.
   Elds. A. C. Pullias and J. E. Acuff will officiate, and burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery.
   Mr. Tarkington was a native of Nashville. He spent most of his life as a boilermaker, but had been retired for approximately 15 years. He was an active member of the Maccabbees and of the Charlotte Avenue Church of Christ up until he became ill six months ago. He was also a member of the Richland Park Croquet Club.
   Surviving besides the one son are his wife, Mrs. Fannie B. Tarkington; one daughter, Mrs. J. E. Lannom; a sister, Mrs. Julia Johnson; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren, all of Nashville.

Sandy Gray Tarkington was born on 12 November 1860 in Williamson County, Tennessee. He was the son of my 3rd-great-grandparents Joseph Tarkington and Amanda Russell. He married Fannie Lou Barfield on 1 November 1885 in Davidson County, Their daughter Susan was born in 1886, and their son Robert Lee was born in 1889. Sandy died in Nashville on 5 July 1942.

She married Thomas Jefferson Yarbrough on 11 December 1906 in Hamilton County, Tennessee. Her husband died on 28 July 1931. Sophronia died in Nashville on 17 January 1937.

    Mrs. Ballow died Friday afternoon at her residence here.
    The widow of Thomas Burwell Ballow, she had lived in Nashville nearly 70 years. Prior to living here, she lived in Franklin, Williamson County.
    Mrs. Ballow was a member of the Hillsboro Presbyterian Church.
    Surviving are her daughters, Miss Elizabeth Ballow and Mrs. Eugenia Gambill; her sister, Mrs. Julia Johnson, and her brother, Sandy Tarkington.

Sarah Jane "Sallie" Tarkington was born on 13 August 1857 in Williamson County, Tennessee. She was the daughter of my 3rd-great-grandparents Joseph Tarkington and Amanda Russell. Sarah married Thomas Burwell Ballow on 13 October 1885 in Davidson County, Tennessee. They had a son, Thomas Burwell Ballow (born 23 March 1895), and a daughter, Elizabeth Fort Ballow (born 2 October 1899). Eugenia Gambill was Sarah's stepdaughter. Her husband Thomas died on 1 November 1904. Her son Thomas died on 20 September 1935. Sarah died on 10 December 1937 and was buried on 13 December 1937.

   CHESTERTON, Oct. 12–Mrs. Malinda Lawrence, who resided in the Chesterton vicinity for almost three-quarters of a century, died Monday morning in the Methodist hospital, Gary. She was 73 years old.
   The decedent was born March 16, 1875 in Baileytown, and spent all her life in the community. Her husband, Charles, died 12 years ago.
    Surviving are two sons, Rudolph and Randolph, and one daughter, Mrs. Dorothy Harbrecht, all of Chesterton; two sisters, Mrs. Mary Dahlquist and Mrs. Minnie Olson, both of Chicago; and two brothers, Gust Borg of Chicago, and Daniel Borg of San Francisco.
   Services will be held Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Bethlehem Lutheran church with the Rev. Carl Lorimer officiating. Burial will be in Chesterton cemetery.
   Friends may call at the Flynn funeral home after 1 p.m. Wednesday.

Malinda was the daughter of my 3rd-great-granparents John Borg and Johanna Carolina Samuelson. She married Charles August Lawrence on 28 November 1900 in Chesterton, Porter County, Indiana. They had three children: Elmer Rudolph (born  8 February 1903), Dorothy F. (born 31 March 1905), and Edward Randolph (born 3 November 1908). Her husband Charles died on 21 December 1936. Malinda died on 11 October 1948 in Gary, Lake County, Indiana.

Thomas Burwell Ballow was born in Tennessee on 29 December 1904. He was the son of Robert S. Ballow and Martha Ann Temple. He married Helen M. Ballow on 6 October 1870 in Williamson County, Tennessee. They had a daughter, Eugenia Temple Ballow (born 2 August 1871), and a son, Robert S. Ballow (born November 1879). He married my 2nd-great-grandfather's sister Sarah Jane Tarkington on 13 October 1885 in Davidson County, Tennessee. They had a son, Thomas Burwell Ballow (born 23 March 1895), and a daughter, Elizabeth Fort Ballow (born 2 October 1899). Thomas died in Nashville, Tennessee on 1 November 1904.

    Mrs. Davis died yesterday morning at her home after a year's illness. The body is at the funeral home.
    A native of Nashville, Mrs. Davis was the former Lena Alley, daughter of the late Walter P. Alley and Idella Young Alley. She was educated in Nashville public schools and lived here all her life.
    In 1895 she was married to Larned Davis, a Nashville millwright. He died in 1935.
    Mrs. Davis was a member of the Church of Christ.
    She is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Charles Jacobs and Miss Frances Davis, both of Nashville, and Mrs. I. G. Harris, Gallatin; two sons, John R. Davis, Nashville, and Walter E. He retired as secretary in the Chicago Treasurer's Office after 25 years service. He was a member of the Redeemer Lutheran Church, St. Petersburg. Mr. Anderson is survived by his wife, Ellen V.; son, Earl T., Houston, Tex.; daughter, Mrs. Henry C. Gatlin, Ridgewood, N.J.; a brother, Reuben A., Chicago; sister, Mrs. Esther Kellman, Selah Wash.; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday (Dec. 4, 1965) in the Downs-Ford Chapel, 1045 Ninth Ave. N., with the Rev. L. F. Gerhart officiating. My great-grandfather Edward Theodore Anderson was born on 10 August 1882 in Chicago, Illinois. He was the son of Andrew T. Anderson (Andreas Troedsson) and Marthe Elisabeth Erickson (Eriksdatter). He married Ellen Victoria Dahlquist on 20 June 1910 in Chicago. They had two children: Helen Martha Marie Anderson (my paternal grandmother), born  27 September 1911, and Earl Theodore Anderson, born 7 July 1917. Edward and Ellen moved to St. Petersburg, Florida about 1947. He died at New Fern Restorium in St. Petersburg on 2 December 1965. He was buried on 4 December 1965 in Memorial Park Cemetery, St. Petersburg.

Carl J. Schneider was the son of my 2nd-great-grandparents Carl Joseph Schneider and Christina Nagel. He was born on 17 March 1885 in Remagen, Ahrweiler, Rheinland-Pfalz (Rhineland-Palatinate), Germany. He and his family emigrated in 1892, and he grew up in St. Louis, Missouri. He married Louise Scheffer on 12 June 1912 in St. Louis. They had twin daughters, Louisa Virginia and Virginia Louisa, born on 21 March 1915. He died on 19 February 1969 and was buried in Sunset Memorial Park in Affton, St. Louis County, Missouri.

  The funeral will take place from the residence o T. Fagan, North Vine street, at 2 o'clock P.M. to-day (Saturday), to which friends and acquaintances are respectfully invited.

John Cox was the second husband of my 3rd-great-grandmother Mary, the widow of Michael Dyer. They married on 10 April 1871 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Nashville, Tennessee. They had four children: Annie (born about 1872); Thomas (born 6 March 1875), William, (born about 1876), and Nellie (born October 1877). He died on 2 August 1878. He was buried in Calvary Cemetery in Nashville (Section 10, Lot 3, Space 2).
