Wedding Wednesday: Two Announcements (One Incorrect, One Correct)

When the announcement of the marriage of my great-grandparents Edward Theodore Anderson and Ellen Victoria Dahlquist was published in the 24 June 1910 issue of the Chicago, Illinois newspaper Englewood Times, it contained many mistakes. The groom's surname and house number, the bride's father's first initial, and their honeymoon destination were incorrect. I wonder how so many mistakes were made. Maybe whoever took down the information had terrible handwriting.

Englewood Times, 24 June 1910, page 1

A corrected version of the announcement was published in the 1 July 1910 issue of the Englewood Times. The families may have wanted the announcement to be published again with the correct information.

On 6 March 1899, my 2nd-great-grandmother's half-sister Nellie Cox married Owen McDonough in Davidson County, Tennessee. The March 7, 1899 issue of the Nashville American contains an announcement that the couple had obtained a marriage license.

On the same page of the newspaper, there is more news about the Cox family. Nellie's brother Tom Cox was on trial for the murder of William Freeman. It was announced that his case was continued until March 27. (It ended in a mistrial.)

Wedding Wednesday: Mildred Jestes and Marion Webb Elliott

On Thanksgiving Eve in 1936, Mildred Jestes from Sorento, Bond County, Illinois married Marion Webb Elliott from Wood River, Madison County, Illinois. The couple married at the Presbyterian Church in Wood River. The groom was the nephew of Louise Elliott, the third wife of my great-grandfather Henry Brown Gatlin. He was also my 6th cousin twice removed. Louise (my 5th cousin three times removed as well as my step-great-grandmother) was a distant cousin of my great-grandmother Anna Gertrude Tarkington, Henry Brown Gatlin's second wife. I don't think the two women knew that they were related. They may not even have known each other.

Alton Evening Telegraph, 27 November 1936, page 6

Henry and Louise attended the couple's wedding. It is interesting that they were referred to as "Mr. and Mrs. H. B. Gatlin of Chicago." Although their residence was accurate, their marital status was probably not. When Louise filled out her Social Security application on 1 December 1936, she stated that her name was Louise Elliott Francis. If they married legally, they probably did it later.
