Church Record Sunday: Matilde Josefine Eriksen

Chicago's vital records prior to 8 October 1871 were destroyed in the Great Chicago Fire. However, church records record the birth, baptism, and burial of Matilde Josefine Eriksen.

Matilde Josefine was the daughter of my 2nd-great-grandmother's brother Elias Eriksen (also spelled Erickson) and his wife Ingeborg. She may have been their first child; I have not found records for any earlier children. She was born on 4 November 1863.

Records for Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Chicago, Illinois are available on Ancestry.com in the collection U.S., Evangelical Lutheran Church of America, Records, 1875-1940. Although it would seem from the name of the collection that no records are available before 1875, some earlier records are available for Our Saviour's Lutheran Church.

On 31 January 1864, Matilde Josefine was baptized at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church.

An August 1864 burial was recorded for Elias Eriksens Barn (Elias Eriksen's child.)

Although no name is given, I believe that this child is Matilde Josefine. I have not found any earlier children of Elias Eriksen, and I have found no further record of this Matilde Josefine. Another child of Elias Eriksen, born on 24 September 1869, was given the same name and was baptized at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church on 25 December 1869.

Without these church records, I would not know about the first Matilde Josefine Eriksen. Now she will be remembered.

Church Record Sunday: Catholic Church Records in New York City

Basilica of Saint Patrick's Old Cathedral, Mulberry Street, New York, New York

Yesterday I attended the lecture "Finding Your Ancestors in Catholic New York" at the Parish House of the Basilica of Saint Patrick's Old Cathedral in New York City. The lecture was sponsored by the New York Irish History Roundtable. Kate Feighery, Archival Manager for the Archdiocese of New York, talked about different types of sacramental records, where to find the records, and finding an ancestor's parish.

The Archdiocese of New York covers Manhattan, the Bronx, Staten Island, as well as Dutchess, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Sullivan, Ulster, and Westchester Counties. The Archives of the Archdiocese of New York are located at 201 Seminary Avenue, Yonkers, NY 10704.

The Diocese of Brooklyn covers Brooklyn and Queens. The Archives of the Diocese of Brooklyn are located at 310 Prospect Park West, Brooklyn, NY 11215.

Sacramental records are kept by parishes. The Archives of the Archdiocese of New York do not have sacramental records, and the Archives of the Diocese of Brooklyn only have the sacramental records of nine closed parishes, three closed hospitals, and two orphanages.

Church Record Sunday: Südbadische Standesbücher

Church records from southern Baden are available online at http://www.landesarchiv-bw.de/web/49484. The records, which are held by Staatsarchiv Freiburg, cover the years 1810-1870, although the full date range may not be available for every locality.

I have ancestors from southern Baden, so I was very excited when I learned that these records are available online. I have been looking at Catholic church records from Görwihl and Niederwihl.

I found the birth record for my 3rd-great-grandmother Maria Bär in the Görwihl Catholic church records:

I found the marriage record for my 3rd-great-grandparents Jakob Dreier and Franziska Schäuble in the Niederwihl Catholic church records:

Church Record Sunday: Marriage of Edward Lucas and Bridget Scott

My 8th-great-grandparents Edward Lucas and Bridget Scott married in 1700. They were Quakers, so they first had to declare their intentions. Bridget belonged to the Chesterfield Monthly Meeting in Burlington Co., New Jersey, where Edward declared his intentions on the 4th day of the 5th month 1700 (4 July 1700).

Edward and Bridget declared their intentions again at the Chesterfield Monthly Meeting on the 1st day of the 6th month 1700 (1 August 1700). Edward brought a certificate from the meeting he belonged to, the Falls Monthly Meeting in Bucks Co, Pennsylvania.

Church Record Sunday: Disownment of Edward Lucas

Ancestry.com recently added Quaker records from the late 1600s-late 1900s to their collection. I have some Quaker ancestors, so this was exciting news to me. Among the records, I found these items referring to my 7th-great-grandfather Edward Lucas:

Falls Monthly Meeting, Bucks Co,, Pennsylvania, 4th of 11 mo. 1737. Ancestry.com. U.S., Quaker Meeting Records, 1681-1994 [database on-line]. Provo, UT, USA: Ancestry.com Operations, Inc., 2014. Original data: Swarthmore College; Swarthmore, Pennsylvania; Philadelphia Yearly Meeting Minutes; Call Number: MR-Ph 177.

Falls Monthly Meeting, Bucks Co,, Pennsylvania, 7th of 5 mo. 1760. Ancestry.com. U.S., Quaker Meeting Records, 1681-1994 [database on-line]. Provo, UT, USA: Ancestry.com Operations, Inc., 2014. Original data: Swarthmore College; Swarthmore, Pennsylvania; Philadelphia Yearly Meeting Minutes; Call Number: MR-Ph 177.

Falls Monthly Meeting, Bucks Co., Pennsylvania, 4th of 6 mo. 1760. Ancestry.com. U.S., Quaker Meeting Records, 1681-1994 [database on-line]. Provo, UT, USA: Ancestry.com Operations, Inc., 2014. Original data: Swarthmore College; Swarthmore, Pennsylvania; Philadelphia Yearly Meeting Minutes; Call Number: MR-Ph 177.

Edward Lucas married out of unity, and long before 1760, he left Bucks County, Pennsylvania and settled in Virginia (now West Virginia). But in 1760, he was disowned. It can be worthwhile to look at records in an ancestor's former place of residence, even if the person left the area long ago; you still might find something!
