Flag Day - Peru

June 7 is Flag Day in Peru, the homeland of my sister-in-law. The date was chosen because the Battle of Arica took place on June 7, 1880. The battle was part of the War of the Pacific, in which Peru and Bolivia fought against Chile. Colonel Alfonso Ugarte y Vernal died during the Battle of Arica, after he rode his horse off a cliff to prevent the Chileans from capturing the Peruvian flag.

The Peruvian flag is red and white. Red represents the blood spilled during Peru's fight for independence, and white represents bravery and peace.

The national ensign or state flag is used by state institutions. It is the flag that is used when the flag is hoisted during ceremonies.

The war flag is used by Peruvian military and national police.

The naval jack is used on battleships.

Flag raising ceremonies are held on Flag Day. The military march Marcha de Banderas is sung as the flag is hoisted.

National Day of Sweden

June 6 is the National Day of Sweden. It was first celebrated in 1916, and was formerly known as Swedish Flag Day. The above poster is from 1916. The translation of the poster's text is "On June 6, the Swedish Flag Day, Stadium Skansen, Hasselbacken."

One Year with Kit

One year ago today, I adopted Kit from P.A.T.C.H. in Pompton Lakes, New Jersey. He is such a good, sweet boy. He is very gentle and gets along with all my other cats. He loves to cuddle with me. I love him dearly and am very glad that he is part of my family.

Shopping Saturday: Wegman & Sons Grocery

My great-grandfather's sister's husband Anthony Leo "Andy" Wegman worked with his father Herman J. Wegman and his brother John P. Wegman in the family grocery business, Wegman & Sons. The store was located at 3326 Shenandoah Ave., St. Louis, Missouri.

One of the products that they sold was India tea.

Friend of Friends Friday: Jim, Slave of Joseph Crispin

 RAN away from the subscriber on the 25th September last, a negro fellow named JIM, about twenty or twenty-one years of age, five feet six or seven inches high, black smooth skin, round face, and a pleasing countenance, something bow legged, and well set, he has remarkable long feet, with considerable long great toes : had om when he went away, an old blue jacket lined with green baize, a pair of tgrowsers and shirt of brown linnen ; he was formerly the property of Thomas Spight, deceased.
  A reward of TWELVE DOLLARS will be given to any person, if said fellow is taken up within the county and brought to the subscriber in Newbern ; and if taken up out of the county, Twenty Dollars will be given, and all reasonable charges paid. JOSEPH CRISPIN.

 N.B. All masters of vessels are forwarned from carrying him away, and all persons from harbouring or employing said fellow, under the penalty of the law.

Thriller Thursday: Tom Cox Rescues Sister

On 13 December 1897, my 2nd-great-grandmother's half-brother Tom Cox was arrested for assault. He had gone to Jessie Shivers' "house of ill fame" at 613 Line Street, Nashville, Tennessee on Saturday, 11 December 1897. Line Street was the center of Nashville's red-light district. Jessie Shivers claimed that Tom had threatened to kill her and the other residents of the house, and that he had hit her hands with a pistol and broken her ring.

Tom had gone to 613 Line Street to rescue his sister Nellie. She had run away from home and had ended up at Jessie Shivers' house. Tom explained his reasons for coming to the house, but was refused entry. Nellie escaped out a window after hearing Tom's voice.

The officer that had been called to the scene, Patrolman Bergin, testified that he had not found a pistol when he searched Tom. Judge Anderson dismissed the case against Tom. 

Tom was frequently in trouble with the law. It seems believable that he would have been carrying a pistol. But whether he was or not, he also seems to have been trying to look out for his sister. Since Nellie escaped when she had the chance, she apparently wanted to leave Jessie Shivers' house.
